Good for them. Turkey granted 'market economy' statusBrussels | November 10, 2005 12:01:13 AM IST The European Union has granted market economy status to Turkey, an important step in the country's attempts to join the bloc. However, in making the announcement Wednesday the European Commission said Turkey must open to trade with Cyprus and continue other economic reforms. The market economy status should increase interest in Turkey among foreign and domestic investors. The EC report said it was concerned that the pace of reform in Turkey had slowed in recent months. Negotiations to accept Turkey into the EU began several weeks ago and are expected to take about 10 years. The EC also suggested Wednesday that its members begin accession talks with Macedonia, but did not set a date for the talks to begin. Link
