This is very reminiscent of the nurse shortage/s. More money does not necessarily mean more doctors and it doesn't mean they'll stay in Canada. One can hope though, right? Universities get $33M to train 337 new doctorsCanadian Press TORONTO — Hundreds of new family doctors will be ready to practice by 2008 because of an additional $33 million for medical schools, Health Minister George Smitherman said Thursday. The money will allow four universities to accept more students and should mean that thousands of Ontario residents currently without a family physician will soon be under doctor's care, Smitherman said from the University of Toronto medical school. "This investment will create 141 new family residency positions in Ontario by 2006 and that means there will be 337 more family doctors ready to practice by 2008,'' Smitherman said. The money is part of a government promise to increase family-medicine residency positions at schools by 70 per cent. The money will be split between McMaster University, the University of Ottawa, the University of Toronto and the University of Western Ontario. Queen's University in Kingston, Ont., and London's University of Western Ontario got similar funding in March. Link
