Scott comes under fire
Ontario premier is among those pointing fingers at minister for reserve's water fiasco
OTTAWA - Native Affairs Minister Andy Scott is dismissing calls for his resignation as Ontario begins airlifting ill residents from a remote northern reserve long plagued by contaminated drinking water.
Mr. Scott, the Liberal MP for Fredericton, defiantly argued Wednesday he has done everything asked of him by the Kashechewan First Nation, where a number of residents have fallen sick.
"It's a tragedy, I'm aware of that, and we're doing everything we can," Mr. Scott said in an interview.
He added that he flew last week to the reserve, located off James Bay, with the sole purpose of offering whatever assistance was needed following the discovery of high levels of E. coli in the local drinking water.
Later, when he was speaking to reporters following Question Period, Mr. Scott said he considers the reserve's list of demands "generally" met - except for finding a longer-term solution.
"I'm going to find it, with them," Mr. Scott added before bolting for a meeting.
His comments did little, however, to quell the growing criticism of his department's handling of the situation.
Even Ontario Liberal Premier Dalton McGuinty, who gave the emergency evacuation order Tuesday night, accused the federal minister of being "missing in action" at a reserve that has been under a boil-water order for more than two years.
The premier added that it is "unacceptable" that the residents of Kashechewan have been living in "deplorable" conditions on the federal government's watch.
"This is Ontario at the beginning of the 21st century," Mr. McGuinty said Wednesday. "No families should have to tolerate what these families are going through."
Ontario New Democrat MPP Gilles Bisson went one step further by suggesting Mr. Scott "should resign . . . no doubt about it.
